Can I Really Improve My Egg Quality? What the Science Says (and What’s Just TikTok Talk)

If you have spent even ten minutes scrolling through fertility social media, you have likely seen the claims: “Drink this green smoothie to reverse egg aging!” or “Take these twelve supplements to fix your egg quality in 30 days!”
When you are trying to conceive or preparing for an IVF cycle, it is incredibly easy to fall down these rabbit holes. But as fertility specialists, we hear the anxiety these trends cause every single day.
Let's separate the viral myths from actual medical science to understand what truly impacts your egg health.
The Biological Truth: Quantity vs. Quality
First, a quick biology refresher. Unlike men, who produce new sperm every few months, women are born with all the eggs they will ever have - roughly 1 to 2 million at birth. By puberty, that number drops to about 300,000, and it continues to decrease with every menstrual cycle. This is your egg quantity (often measured via an AMH blood test).
Egg quality, however, refers to something different: whether the egg is genetically normal (euploid) or abnormal (aneuploid) and whether it has enough cellular power to grow into an embryo.
As an egg prepares for ovulation or retrieval, its nucleus must divide its chromosomes perfectly. This division process requires an immense amount of cellular energy, which is generated by tiny powerhouses inside the cytoplasm called mitochondria.

What We Cannot Change (The TikTok Myths)
Let’s be direct: You cannot create new eggs, and you cannot reverse chronological age.
As we age, the mitochondria inside our eggs become less efficient. This energy drop makes chromosomal division errors more common. No supplement, diet, or wellness trend can alter the genetic blueprint inside an egg once an error occurs. If a video promises to "reverse ovarian aging," it is marketing, not medicine.
What We Can Influence (The Science)
While you cannot change the genetics of an egg, an egg takes about 90 days to mature inside the ovary before it is ovulated or retrieved. During this crucial three-month window, the egg is highly vulnerable to its environment - but it is also highly receptive to healthy changes.
Here is what peer-reviewed research shows actually supports the cellular health of those maturing eggs:
1. Cellular Energy Support (CoQ10)
Because maturing eggs require so much mitochondrial energy, Coenzyme Q10 (specifically in its highly absorbable form, Ubiquinol) has shown promise in clinical studies. It acts like a battery boost for the cytoplasm, helping the egg manage the complex process of chromosomal division. That said, current studies haven't yet shown that CoQ10 supplementation has an impact on live birth rates.
2. Managing Oxidative Stress
Oxidative stress (damage from unstable molecules in the body) can harm the outer layers of the egg, including the zona pellucida. A diet rich in Mediterranean-style antioxidants - think leafy greens, wild fish, berries, and olive oil - helps neutralize these molecules.
3. Blood Flow and Oxygenation
Eggs need a robust blood supply to receive nutrients. Factors that constrict blood vessels or cause systemic inflammation - like smoking, high alcohol intake, and chronic high stress - directly impact the microenvironment of the growing follicle.
What Doesn't (TikTok Myths)
- Reversing your chronological age
- "Secret" detoxes or fertility teas
- Massive, unregulated supplement stacks
- Fasting or extreme restrictive diets
What Works (Science-Backed)
- Supporting the 90-day maturation window
- Reducing systemic inflammation & smoking
- Maintaining stable blood sugar levels
The Big Picture
Improving egg quality isn’t about achieving perfection or buying expensive, unproven wellness packages. It is about creating the healthiest possible environment for your ovaries over a consistent three-month period.
