Who needs donor eggs

Egg donation is the process where we use the eggs from a young, fertile woman when the use of own eggs in an IVF procedure is not an option. Donor egg treatment is used in the following cases:

  • Premature ovarian failure (POF), a condition in which menopause has started much earlier than usual. This could also be due to medical reasons (past cancer treatments).
  • Advanced reproductive age. As women age, the random chromosomal abnormalities in embryos increase due to poor egg quality. This leads to low success rates and high miscarriage rates.
  • Diminished ovarian reserve, this means that the number of eggs that a woman produces is very low and she cannot be assisted through other fertility treatments using her own gametes.
  • Genetically transmitted diseases that could be passed on to your child.
  • When there are multiple failures with own egg IVF treatment cycles.
Who Needs Donor Eggs
The vast majority of cases receiving egg donation treatment cycles are indeed reproductively older women but this process is also offered in women with premature ovarian failure that cannot utilise their own eggs. It is important to note that success rates remain equally high, no matter what the age of the recipient is. This is ensured by following strict donor selection and recruitment standards and also by processing the eggs and embryos in the embryology lab in the most effective way by always striving to achieve excellent results and maintain high-quality service levels. Women that have entered menopause or have faced failed cycles due to the presence of endometriosis also have the same success rates as all other recipients. This means that women should not feel pressured to move forward with egg donation treatments unless they feel ready to do so.

As this procedure is regulated in different ways from each country and the costs vary greatly, many people decide to travel abroad for fertility treatments and especially when egg donation is required. It is important to investigate which country and which specific clinic offers what you are looking for, as there are many differences in country-to-country legislation, treatment costs, transparency and the way treatments are carried out.
